New Murder Mystery Improv Show Slated for Woodstock Atlanta Bread
Offshoot Productions’ Gallery Players improvisation troupe is bringing a twist to the popular murder mystery genre when it performs at Woodstock’s Atlanta Bread Company on Sunday, March 22. In Murder Off the Cuff, the improv performers incorporate audience suggestions for murder weapons, motivations, conspiracies and much more. The actors portray famous detectives, plot a crime, find ingenious ways of committing murder, or solve a mystery, all the while using the hilarious improvisation approaches that have created a loyal following.

Theatrical Outfit Raises the Roof with Canadian Blockbuster Musical, Tent Meeting
March 11 – April 5, 2009
From March 11 through April 5, 2009, Theatrical Outfit in downtown Atlanta presents the exuberant, old-time gospel musical Tent Meeting by Canadian playwrights Morris Ertman and Ron Reed. Tom Key directs a stellar Atlanta cast that includes Andrew Houchins (Pastor Ernest Douglas/Ben Reimer), Shayne Kohout (Dolly Hoveland), Daniel May (George Hoveland/Bob Lefsrud), Glenn Rainey (Sam Lundquist/Angus McPhee), and Geoff “Googie” Uterhardt (Rev. Elroy Phillips). Ann-Carol Pence is musical director.
The setting is the 1930s West Canadian prairie, an agrarian community hard hit by the Great Depression and a severe draught. Embattled and embittered farmer, George Hoveland, sits in his empty silo, smoking and nursing old wounds that threaten his estranged marriage to Dolly, a once vital woman who now seeks solace in her piano-playing and incessant church-going. The couple is stunned one day by the unexpected appearance on their doorstep of a traveling revival group of musicians whose truck has broken down. The itinerant leader, Pastor Ernest Douglas, is a friend of the Hovelands from days gone by, when the three of them, along with Sam Lundquist, the good-natured owner of the local pool hall/drinking emporium, sang together in a similar gospel troupe.
Pastor Douglas, whose call to the ministry tellingly coincided with George and Dolly’s decision to marry, recruits the Hovelands and Sam to assist in the pitching of the “canvas tabernacle” in a nearby field. As the day unfolds, so too, do inner conflicts, regrets and longings among the characters, and through their gradual immersion in the uplifting music and contagious spirit of communal vulnerability, they undergo deep interpersonal transitions that lead to profound transformations. In one of the play’s most tender moments, the person to make the strongest spiritual impact is the resident preacher, Rev. Phillips, an unassuming, under-confident young man whose genuine concern for the congregation overrides his haunting doubts about his own ministerial abilities.
The story is sweet, poignant and comical, similar in style to a Horton Foote play. In a special note in the script, the playwrights remark that Tent Meeting is “an affectionate nostalgic tribute”…one that focuses on…”the humanity of the people, and, above all, the spirit of the music itself.”
Indeed, both Ertman and Reed drew on the traveling tent meetings of their youth and the time-tested, time-honored hymns and gospels, often sung a capella in barbershop quartet-style harmonies. The musical selections, which gloriously range from Up Above My Head to Balm in Gilead to O Happy Day to Walk in Jerusalem Just like John, are integrated into the action of the story. And though the play is set in Canada, the hymns and situations are familiar terrain in the Bible-Belt American South.
Morris Ertman explains, “The strength of Tent Meeting lies in the genuine tensions of small-town relationships—like strained marriages and broken friendships…in my day, most small communities were split between the church and the pool hall”…(but)…”the truth in this play is not just meted out by ministers, it’s meted out by the owner of the pool hall, and it’s my belief that God works that way.”
And even though Tent Meeting is about forgiveness and the revival of faith, it easily accommodates the presence of non-belief and welcomes the meeting of the sacred and the secular on common ground. Ertman continues, “It doesn’t make you feel guilty if you are a non-believer…this play deals honestly with unbelief, and it allows people to be in a place of unbelief if that’s where they want to live.”
Tent Meeting also benefits from the subtle, cleverly economical use of props, sound effects and even actors in double roles, which makes for inspired staging.

M*A*S*H at Newnan Community Theatre Company
A Mobile Army Surgical Unit from the Korean War has moved onto the Newnan Community Theatre Company's main stage for just six performances. M*A*S*H, the famous 4077th, is taking a brief tour in Newnan for the theatre's first show of their 2009 Season.
Richard Hooker wrote about his experiences as a surgeon during the Korean War. His book eventually became a movie, TV series, and play. Much loved and probably best well-known was the TV series, starring Alan Alda. The play (by Tim Kelly) features the characters now so famous - Hawkeye, Hot Lips Houlihan, Father Mulcahy, Trapper John, and Frank Burns.
One of the challenges for this production has been recreating Korean War-era barracks and hunting down older uniforms. The show is being directed by NCTC's managing director, Rick Olsen. This is Olsen's directorial debut. As a history buff and U.S. Air Force Retiree, Olsen was a good fit to direct this show.
The cast includes 25 adults, both NCTC veterans and newcomers. Darren Mathews, head of NCTC's Improv group, N.I.T.W.I.T.S., is portraying Hawkeye. JohnPaul Phillips is his buddy, Duke, and Chaz Ferguson is Trapper John. New to NCTC is John Chappell, portraying Col. Henry Blake. Also new to NCTC is Bill Monroe as Capt. Frank Burns. Last seen as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, Sam Gentry is Father Mulcahy. NCTC veteran actor Amy Beachaum is Margaret Houlihan.
Rounding out the cast is Reynolds Allen (Gen. Hammond), Scott Pollak (Cap. Waldowski), Stephen Pye (Ugly), RaShaan Smith (Spearchucker), Jamie French (Sgt. Devine), Christian Pollak (Radar), Brian Walsh (Pvt Lopez), Duck Kingsenamongkhol (Ho-Jon), Judie Hardin (Bridget), Heather Hyde (Janice), Megan Martin (Louise), Sarah Jordan (Nancy), Renee Gentry (Mercy), Brenda Naughton (Ruth), Kristin Owens (Mitzi), Kelsey Gentry (Fritzi), and Ashlee Sims (Agnes).
M*A*S*H will be performed only six times. Opening night is Friday, January 23rd at 8 pm. Performances following are: Saturday, January 23 at 8 pm; Sunday, January 25 at 2:30 pm; Thurday, January 29 at 8 pm; Friday, January 30 at 8 pm; and Saturday, January 31 at 8 pm.

Richard Hooker wrote about his experiences as a surgeon during the Korean War. His book eventually became a movie, TV series, and play. Much loved and probably best well-known was the TV series, starring Alan Alda. The play (by Tim Kelly) features the characters now so famous - Hawkeye, Hot Lips Houlihan, Father Mulcahy, Trapper John, and Frank Burns.
One of the challenges for this production has been recreating Korean War-era barracks and hunting down older uniforms. The show is being directed by NCTC's managing director, Rick Olsen. This is Olsen's directorial debut. As a history buff and U.S. Air Force Retiree, Olsen was a good fit to direct this show.
The cast includes 25 adults, both NCTC veterans and newcomers. Darren Mathews, head of NCTC's Improv group, N.I.T.W.I.T.S., is portraying Hawkeye. JohnPaul Phillips is his buddy, Duke, and Chaz Ferguson is Trapper John. New to NCTC is John Chappell, portraying Col. Henry Blake. Also new to NCTC is Bill Monroe as Capt. Frank Burns. Last seen as Scrooge in A Christmas Carol, Sam Gentry is Father Mulcahy. NCTC veteran actor Amy Beachaum is Margaret Houlihan.
Rounding out the cast is Reynolds Allen (Gen. Hammond), Scott Pollak (Cap. Waldowski), Stephen Pye (Ugly), RaShaan Smith (Spearchucker), Jamie French (Sgt. Devine), Christian Pollak (Radar), Brian Walsh (Pvt Lopez), Duck Kingsenamongkhol (Ho-Jon), Judie Hardin (Bridget), Heather Hyde (Janice), Megan Martin (Louise), Sarah Jordan (Nancy), Renee Gentry (Mercy), Brenda Naughton (Ruth), Kristin Owens (Mitzi), Kelsey Gentry (Fritzi), and Ashlee Sims (Agnes).
M*A*S*H will be performed only six times. Opening night is Friday, January 23rd at 8 pm. Performances following are: Saturday, January 23 at 8 pm; Sunday, January 25 at 2:30 pm; Thurday, January 29 at 8 pm; Friday, January 30 at 8 pm; and Saturday, January 31 at 8 pm.

Comedy and Surprise Define World Premiere Smart Cookie at the Alliance
Playwright Julia Brownell’s Smart Cookie is a wickedly funny comedy about how a shocking surprise helps a wealthy Manhattan socialite become the woman she never realized she wanted to be. The clear favorite of the 2008 Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition judges, this World Premiere play combines laugh-out-loud humor with a provocative story about social image and the powers that can change a person’s attitudes. For those who loved the film Juno, here is another unexpected tale of teenagers and pregnancy. The play is directed by Jeremy B. The Legacy Theatre, a full-time professional theatre, is holding auditions by appointment only for Disney’s High School Musical 2. NON-EQUITY PERFORMERS. Auditions will be held Sunday, March 1 from 1:00PM-4:30PM at The Legacy Theatre at 1175 Senoia Road, Tyrone, GA 30290. Auditions are open to ages 18+. Those 17 and under, please refer to our Youth Ensemble Auditions. Seeking high-energy actor/singer/dancers who can portray teenagers. Please prepare one contemporary pop or musical theatre song in the style of High School Musical or from any of the three HSM movies. Accompanist provided. Those wishing to audition must prepare a short, contemporary pop or musical theatre song in the style of High School Musical. A selection from any of the three HSM movies is fine. Please bring piano sheet music (accompanist provided) or tape/CD accompaniment (player provided). Singing a cappella is fine. All auditionees will perform a short dance combination that will be taught at the audition. Three casts will be selected from these auditions. Cast A will rehearse June 22-26 and will perform July 10-19; Cast B will rehearse June 29-July 3 and will perform July 21-26; Cast C will rehearse July 6-10 and will perform July 28-August 2. Alliance Theatre to Stage Revolutionary New Gospel Musical

There's a reason to rejoice at the Alliance Theatre this January as the Tim Rice/Andrew Lloyd Webber blockbuster rock opera Jesus Christ Superstar hits the Alliance Stage in an exhilarating new gospel production. The Alliance is thrilled to be mounting its largest production in 20 years, the rousing gospel event: Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL. Audiences will experience the hit musical as never before in an inspirational, hand-clapping event that puts the power of praise back into the gospels. Alliance Theatre Artistic Director Susan V. Booth directs this groundbreaking musical about the last seven days of the life of Christ. Opening Night is Wed., Jan. 21, at 8 p.m. on the Alliance Stage. “I am profoundly lucky to be in the position of being the director of Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL,” said Booth. “One of the greatest works of the theatrical form meets the greatest sound in the world. This is pure, true Atlanta gospel. This is an event that transcends traditional theatre.”
Jesus Christ Superstar GOSPEL puts Judas at the center of the passion story with a rich and deeply human point of view. The show begins with Jesus’ entrance into Jerusalem and continues through the exhilaration and apprehension of the new leader, the effect of the crowds on the Roman occupation forces, and Jesus’ betrayal, trial and crucifixion.
This new version will highlight Atlanta’s rich gospel tradition with an extraordinary 27-member local choir on stage alongside a Broadway-caliber cast. Andrew Lloyd Webber’s score gets an inspirational new beat that will move audiences to new heights with memorable songs like “I Don’t Know How to Love Him,” “Everything’s Alright” and “Could We Start Again Please?”
Andrew Lloyd Webber and Lyricist Tim Rice gave special permission to develop this new interpretation of the work to Louis St. Louis, an experienced Broadway and film composer and music director (credits include Smokey Joe’s Café, Grease, Grease 2 and Mahogany), whose own musical roots spring from the Detroit Pentecostal Church.
The 50-member cast and choir includes 36 local performers. Actors in notable roles include Darius de Haas as Jesus; Nicole Long as Mary Magdalene; Darryl Jovan Williams as Judas; Eric Jordan Young as Herod; Destan Owens as Pilate; Keith Adams as Simon; and Philip Dorian McAdoo as Peter.

Auditions for "The Importance of Being Earnest", Main Street Players, Griffin
Auditions for “The Importance of Being Earnest,” Main Street Players next production, will be held Wednesday and Thursday, January 7th and 8th, at The Main Street Theatre, 115 North Hill Street, in Griffin, Ga, starting each at 7:00PM each night.
Auditioners need to prepare a one-minute monologue.
Roles open are for two women in their 20's, two men in their 20's, two men any age over 20, one man 35 plus, one woman 40 plus and one man 40 plus.
Call 770-827-9821 for an appointment to audition.
Callbacks are possible for the following Saturday, January 10th.
“The Importance of Being Earnest,” by Oscar Wilde, will perform February 26 through March 8, 2009, with performances Thursday, Friday and Saturdays at 7:30PM and Sundays at 3:00PM. Anyone winning an audition is expected to perform in every performance as well as rehearsals four weeks prior to the performance dates.
