Grease is Roaring into Atlanta's Fabulous Fox Theatre from August 7-16

“We are delighted to announce that due to popular demand we are adding additional performances for the previously announced, hot new production of GREASE™,” states Christopher B. Manos, Producer of Theater of the Stars. “We’ll open a few days earlier on Friday, August 7 to give audiences more fun “Summer Nights” at the Fabulous Fox! Tickets are on sale now at www.ticketmaster.com.”

Audiences across the country are going wild for this show with sellout engagements, enthusiastic crowds and great reviews. “Infectious talent and energy flows from the kids at Rydell High. Emily Padgett's Sandy Dumbrowski and Eric Schneider's Danny Zuko are impressive,” cheers Variety. The St Paul Pioneer Press says, “The Broadway touring version of 'Grease' is as fast as a T-Bird on a date.” And “The cast shines....there are some moments of real "Oh, wow!" brilliance,” raves broadwayworld.com.

After spending a hopelessly devoted summer with Sandy Dumbrowski, the new girl in town, Danny Zuko's world is thrown upside down when Sandy appears at Rydell High on the first day of school. What follows is a rock n' roll celebration of growin' up, cruisin' with friends and goin' steady. The new production of GREASE™ features songs from the smash hit 1978 motion picture for the first time ever in a Broadway production including “Sandy,” the Academy Award nominated song “Hopelessly Devoted to You,” “Grease” and “You’re the One That I Want” - both of which were #1 hits on the Billboard Top 100 list. These songs will be heard in addition to the Jacobs/Casey songs made famous by the original stage production including “Summer Nights,” “Greased Lightnin’” and “We Go Together.”

Platinum-selling recording artist and “American Idol” winner, Taylor Hicks, will join the production as “Teen Angel” beginning on Tuesday, August 11. Hicks made his Broadway debut in the role of “Teen Angel.”

GREASE opened on Broadway on June 7, 1972 and ran for nearly eight years at various Broadway theaters. It closed as the longest running show in Broadway history after playing 3,388 performances. In 1978, GREASE™ became a hugely popular feature film starring John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John in the lead roles. A brand new production of GREASE™ opened on Broadway on Sunday, August 19, 2007. It was born out of NBC’s landmark talent competition TV series, “Grease: You’re The One That I Want.” The weekly talent competition drew 90 million viewers, and allowed America to vote for its favorite contestants to play the lead roles of “Sandy” and “Danny” on Broadway.

Directed and choreographed by two-time Tony Award-winner Kathleen Marshall (The Pajama Game, Wonderful Town), GREASE™ features book, music and lyrics by Jim Jacobs and Warren Casey. Additional songs from the film are by Barry Gibb, John Farrar, Louis St. Louis and Scott Simon. GREASE™ features scenic design by Tony Award winner Derek McLane (33 Variations), costume design by two-time Tony Award winner Martin Pakledinaz (Thoroughly Modern Millie, Kiss Me Kate), lighting design by Tony Award winner Kenneth Posner (The Coast of Utopia, Wicked) and sound design by Brian Ronan (Spring Awakening, Curtains).

42nd Street Starring Loretta Swit at The Fabulous Fox July 28 - Aug 2

“We are thrilled to bring back the tap dancing musical extravaganza 42nd STREET,” exclaims Christopher B. Manos, Producer of Theater of the Stars. “And starring as the perennial leading lady ‘Dorothy Brock,” is the sublime Loretta Swit, an amazing actress whose career spans stage, screen and television roles from Mame to ‘Hot Lips Houlihan’ in M*A*S*H*. Our brand new production is sure to delight audiences of all ages! Join us for an unforgettable experience and see one of the all-time great musicals at the Fabulous Fox Theatre from July 28 through August 2. Tickets are on sale NOW at all Ticketmaster outlets and www.ticketmaster.com.”

Based on the 1980 Tony-Award winning musical, 42nd STREET tells the story of young Peggy Sawyer who comes to New York in search of fame and fortune. She catches the eye of one of the most powerful directors on Broadway, Julian Marsh. As can only happen in a Broadway musical, Peggy is discovered, hired, fired, and eventually becomes the star of the show! In between the intrigue and the plot twists are thrilling dance numbers, fabulous sets and gorgeous costumes, and some of the most famous songs ever heard on a Broadway stage including “You’re Getting To Be A Habit With Me,” “We’re In The Money,” “The Lullaby of Broadway,” “About A Quarter To Nine,” “Shuffle Off To Buffalo,” and the title song, “42nd Street.” Theatermania.com cheers “When you add up all the dancing feet and the wonderful songs 42nd STREET is good, old-fashioned fun!”

From the source material of 1930’s movies including “42nd Street” (1933), “Gold Diggers of 1933,” “Dames” (1934) and “Gold Diggers of 1935,” Michael Stewart and Mark Bramble wrote the book, based on the novel by Bradford Ropes. Harry Warren wrote the music, and Al Dubin wrote the lyrics for the 1980 stage premiere. Broadway icon Gower Champion created the Tony Award winning choreography and directed the original Broadway production which ran for more than 8 years and is one of the longest-running shows in Broadway history.

Starring in 42nd STREET as Broadway diva “Dorothy Brock” is the legendary Loretta Swit. Few actresses can capture the imagination of a generation of television viewers with the charm of Ms. Swit. As quick-witted, impassioned “Major Margaret Houlihan” of television’s most honored series, M*A*S*H*, she became an American icon, and with the popular program now in worldwide syndication, new fans continue to enjoy her lavish portrayal of the sensuous, comedic “Major Houlihan.” Ms. Swit made her Broadway debut in Same Time, Next Year opposite Ted Bessell, and later appeared in The Mystery of Edwin Drood, replacing Cleo Laine. She has toured with national companies of Any Wednesday and with two companies of Mame. She appeared in more than 500 performances of Shirley Valentine, a role for which she won Chicago’s most prestigious theatrical honor, the Sarah Siddons Award. She has starred in more than 25 movies on television, including the original “Cagney and Lacey,” in which she created the role of “Chris Cagney.” Her movie credits include Freebie and the Bean with James Caan and Alan Arkin, Stand Up And Be Counted with Jacqueline Bisset and Blake Edward’s S.O.B. with Julie Andrews and William Holden. Ms. Swit’s wildlife series, “Those Incredible Animals,” was shown twice weekly on the Discovery Channel for an amazing five year run, and now can be seen on Animal Planet.

Also starring in this new production of 42nd STREET:

Steve Blanchard (“Julian Marsh”) His Broadway credits include Beauty and the Beast, Camelot, The Three Musketeers and A Christmas Carol. And on television he’s appeared in “Law and Order,” “Another World,” and “The Guiding Light.” He will be starring in the upcoming national tour of Little House On The Prairie opposite Melissa Gilbert.

Shannon M. O’Bryan (“Peggy Sawyer”) She has performed the role of “Peggy” on Broadway, as well as all over America and abroad. Other Broadway and New York credits include White Christmas, City Center’s Encores: Follies, Face The Music and Of Thee I Sing.

Austin Miller (“Billy Lawlor”) He has starred in the First National Tours of Hairspray (“Link”), Grease (“Kenicke”), and Smokey Joe’s CafĂ© (“Michael”). He was a runner up on the popular TV reality series: “Grease: You’re The One That I Want.” For more information visit www.austinmilleronline.com

Also in the cast are the following: Tony Lawson (“Pat Denning”) He starred as “Thenardier” in Les MisĂ©rables on Broadway and was featured in National Tours of Damn Yankees, Disney’s Beauty and the Beast and Ken Hill’s Phantom of the Opera. Denise Nolin (“Maggie Jones”) Her National Tour credits include Disney’s High School Musical, The Producers and Guys and Dolls. Sarrah Strimel (“Anytime Annie”) Her Broadway credits include Young Frankenstein, The Producers and Encore’s Stairway To Paradise. She was featured in National Tours of Dirty Rotten Scoundrels and The Producers. David Titus (“Abner Dillon”) David starred Off-Broadway as the original “Mother Superior” in Nunsense A-Men, regionally with Sally Struthers in Best Little Whorehouse, and in Mame with Christine Ebersole. James Young (“Bert Barry”) His Broadway credits include Crazy For You (“Custus”), My Fair Lady (“Zolton Karpathy”) with Richard Chamberlain, Me And My Girl (“Bill Snibson”), The Tap Dance Kid and A Chorus Line.

The Creative Team for this new production features Norb Joerder as Director and Choreographer. His extensive Broadway credits include 42nd STREET with Jerry Orbach and Tammy Grimes, La Cage Aux Folles with Gene Barry and Lee Roy Reams, Gypsy with Lanie Kazan, Guys and Dolls with Vic Damone, The Music Man with John Schneider, Annie Get Your Gun with Andrea McArdle, My Fair Lady with Michael Moriarity and a critically acclaimed revival of Camelot starring Robert Goulet.

John Visser will serve as Musical Director. He conducted the National Tour revivals of South Pacific, Camelot, Man of La Mancha, Anything Goes starring Mitzi Gaynor, Guys and Dolls with Maurice Hines and the 30th Anniversary Tour of The Fantasticks starring Robert Goulet.

Rounding out the Creative Team are: James Fouchard as Scenic Designer, Roger Kirk as Costume Designer, Paul Miller as Lighting Designer, Megan Henninger as Sound Designer and Bill Newberry as Teen Ensemble Director. Casting is by Barry Moss and Bob Kale.

Oprah Winfrey Presents The Color Purple Starring Fantasia

Two weeks only!
September 15-27 at the Fabulous Fox Theatre

Theater of the Stars welcomes the soulful singing sensation as she reprises her critically acclaimed role of "Celie" in the smash hit musical

The producers of THE COLOR PURPLE are proud to announce that American Idol Season 3 winner Fantasia Barrino will reprise her starring role of Celie for the Atlanta engagement. Theater of the Stars will host the first North American Touring production of THE COLOR PURPLE for two weeks, September 15-27. Tickets are on sale now at www.ticketmaster.com and 800-982-2787.

Fantasia made her Broadway debut in THE COLOR PURPLE on April 10, 2007. She won the 2007 Theater World Award and received across the board rave reviews, with Clive Barnes of The New York Post exclaiming “Four cheers for Fantasia! There is some elemental quality to Fantasia that is either greatness or something close to it. I feel a lot in the theater but usually I don’t cry. With this performance, I found tears running down my cheeks. If you haven’t seen THE COLOR PURPLE, see it now; if you have seen it, see it again. Something extraordinary is happening at the Broadway theatre that is not to be missed.” The Daily News’ Joe Dziemianowicz shouts out “Fantasia is a hit in THE COLOR PURPLE. Her performance is a must-see. Fantasia gives such a powerful performance it’s almost too beautiful for words!”

As a 19-year old single mother, Fantasia began her path to international stardom when she became the winner of FOX’s hugely successful audience-driven singing competition in May 2004. Now 23, Barrino has garnered critical acclaim for the release of both her debut album, Free Yourself, which marked her becoming the first artist in Billboard Hot 100 chart history to debut at #1 with her debut single “I Believe,” and her second album, FANTASIA, released by J Records on December 12, 2006. To date, she has gathered more than 20 award nominations including Grammy Awards, American Music Awards, Vibe Awards, Soul Train Awards and Soul Train “Lady of Soul” Awards, Billboard Music Awards and R&B & Hip Hop Awards, BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, and Teen Choice Awards.

No stranger to acting, Fantasia also broke records of a different kind after authoring a New York Times best-selling autobiography Life Is Not A Fairy Tale (Simon & Schuster, September 2005) and starring in The Fantasia Barrino Story: Life is Not a Fairytale, the Debbie Allen-directed Lifetime original movie adaptation of her truthful, outspoken, and ultimately healing memoir in August 2006. For her performance, she was nominated for a 2007 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special. The biopic, also nominated as Outstanding Television Movie, Mini-Series or Dramatic Special for the 2007 NAACP Image Awards, ranks as the channel’s second most watched movie and has been seen by 19 million viewers.

With her Broadway debut as Celie, the heart and soul of THE COLOR PURPLE, she added the distinction of being the first ever American Idol winner to star in a Broadway show.

Other featured members of the cast of THE COLOR PURPLE are Felicia P. Fields as Sofia, Angela Robinson as Shug Avery, Rufus Bonds, Jr. as Mister, Stu James as Harpo, LaToya London as Nettie, and Tiffany Daniels as Squeak.

Nominated for eleven Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, THE COLOR PURPLE opened on December 1, 2005 at the Broadway Theatre where it ran for over two record breaking years. It is based on the classic Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Alice Walker and the moving film by Steven Spielberg. It is the unforgettable and inspiring story of a woman named Celie, who finds the strength to triumph over adversity, and discover her unique voice in the world. With a joyous GRAMMY®-nominated score featuring gospel, jazz, pop and the blues, THE COLOR PURPLE is about hope and the healing power of love.

As on Broadway, the first North American Tour of THE COLOR PURPLE is directed by Gary Griffin. THE COLOR PURPLE features a libretto by Pulitzer Prize-winner Marsha Norman, music and lyrics by Grammy Award®-winning composers/lyricists Brenda Russell, Allee Willis and Stephen Bray, and choreography by Donald Byrd. The original creative team of Tony Award®-winner John Lee Beatty (sets), Paul Tazewell (costumes), Tony Award®-winner Brian MacDevitt (lighting), Jon Weston (sound), Jonathan Tunick (orchestrations) and Kevin Stites (Music Supervisor) was reunited for the tour.

The first North American Tour is produced by Oprah Winfrey, Scott Sanders, Roy Furman, Quincy Jones, Creative Battery, Anna Fantaci & Cheryl Lachowicz, Independent Presenters Network, Lowy Family Group, Stephanie McClelland, Gary Winnick, Jan Kallish, Nederlander Presentations, Inc., Bob and Harvey Weinstein, Andrew Asnes & Adam Zotovich and Todd Johnson in association with AEG Live.

NCTC Presents Its First One-Man Show

Most one-man shows are monologues espousing the author’s core beliefs. However, this is not what Newnan Community Theatre Company’s first one man show is. What it is is a hilarious comedy written by Becky Mode. On May 15 and 16, Trey Stephens will star in “Fully Committed.”

In its simplicity, “Fully Committed” is a side-splitting satire about people who are desperate to book a table at New York City’s hottest French restaurant, and the employee who has to deal with them all.

Actor Stephens stated the play selection was pretty easy. Although he liked the idea of being on stage on a rant, he wanted to appeal to a wider audience. “Fully Committed” is not a difficult play to understand or follow. The show follows a young, naĂŻve, unemployed actor in New York City. He works for a restaurant reservations desk where the requests are non-stop. Sam, the main character, is taken advantage of by all the people who desire to get their own way. Throughout the course of the play Sam must try to cope with fulfilling everyone’s needs. This is an impossible task as the needs of others are in direct competition with one another. Sam eventually decides to take control. By the end of the show, Sam goes from being a boy with a dream to a man with a plan.

Stephens chose to do a one-man show because he wanted to expand what he is capable of accomplishing. He also stated he “wanted to set a good example for the artists of Newnan to try and push the envelope a little more. Do something uncomfortable and scary, because that is when the true magic happens.”

“Fully Committed” is comprised of 36 different characters (37 if you count a pre-recorded voice-over), all portrayed by Stephens. He states “Sometimes I disagree with myself, other times I am trying to make sure that I don’t feel too bad about something that I did to myself. I obviously get to talk in silly voices, and playing 10 different women is not easy!”

Trey has been volunteering at NCTC for the past three years. He directed “Noises Off!,” and “Daddy’s Dyin’,” and appeared in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest” and “The Odd Couple.” Stephens is a regular participant in the NITWITS, NCTC’s improvisational comedy troupe. He graduated from the University of Georgia with a BA in Drama and is proud to currently teach Mathematics at Mt. Zion High School in Carroll County.

Playwright Becky Mode developed “Fully Committed” with Mark Setlock. It premiered in New York in 1999 and was an immediate success. Mode is a former actress, waitress, and coat check girl. She was a staff writer on “The Cosby Show.”

“Fully Committed” will be performed in NCTC’s black box theatre, May 15 and 16, at 8 pm. Seating is limited. The cost is $10 per person. Tickets may be purchased from the theatre’s website, newnantheatre.com. You can make a reservation by emailing NCTC at nctc@numail.org or calling the theatre at 770-683-6282. Newnan Community Theatre Company is located in downtown Newnan at 24 1st Avenue. The non-profit organization is completely volunteer-run.

The production team includes Director Alison Chambers, Music Director Barbara Zellner, Assistant Director Chelsea
Rhoades, and Choreographer Kathy Senger of Peachtree City School of Dance.

“I’m very excited about Oliver!,” says Chambers. “I grew up watching this show, and I can’t wait to introduce one of my favorites to another generation. We have an outstanding production team for what is going to be Twilight’s biggest show to date, and I plan on putting 100 people on the stage. We need a large cast of kids and adults, and we’re encouraging families to audition together. Twilight loves having a cast full of families.”

Local award-winning actors Daniel Thomas May and Courtney Patterson tapped to play leads in Cat on a Hot Tin Roof

Georgia Shakespeare's producing artistic director Richard Garner has announced that local award-winning actors Daniel Thomas May and Courtney Patterson have been tapped to play Brick and Maggie Pollitt in Tennessee Williams' sizzling Southern tale of family deception, Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, June 25 to August 1 at the Conant Performing Arts Center (4484 Peachtree Rd. NE).

Recently named two of the best actors in the city by The Atlantan,, Mr. May and Ms. Patterson have been performing together with Georgia Shakespeare for over six years, playing opposite one another in A Streetcar Named Desire, Hamlet and Metamorphoses among others.

"It was very evident throughout the audition process that Daniel and Courtney have an electric on-stage chemistry and have built a rapport with one another through their many years of work together at Georgia Shakespeare," Garner said. "Maggie and Brick are one of the great couples of the American stage and Courtney and Daniel are at the perfect point in their careers to tackle them head on. We'll be seeing fireworks when these two take the stage."

In addition to Mr. May and Ms. Patterson, the cast for Cat on a Hot Tin Roof includes the return of Associate Artist Tim McDonough in the powerhouse role of Big Daddy. This role marks Mr. McDonough's return to Georgia Shakespeare after a five-year hiatus. Previous Georgia Shakespeare roles include King Lear and Willy Loman in Death of a Salesman. Playing opposite Mr. McDonough is Megan McFarland, last seen at Georgia Shakespeare in Antigone, as Big Mama. The cast also includes Tess Malis Kincaid as Mae and Associate Artist Brad Sherrill as Gooper. Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is directed by Jasson Minadakis, Artistic Director of Marin Theatre Company and former Artistic Director of Actor's Express.

In addition to Cat on a Hot Tin Roof, Georgia Shakespeare's 2009 Summer Festival includes Shakespeare's romantic comedy A Midsummer Night's Dream and his rarely produced Titus Andronicus.

When the Fairy King Oberon (Brad Sherrill) decides to meddle in the affairs of the foolish mortals - and immortals - that inhabit a moonlit forest, the magical potion of one little flower causes an awful lot of mayhem in Shakespeare's A Midsummer Night's Dream, June 10 - July 31.

Directed by John Dillon (Coriolanus, Julius Caesar), A Midsummer Night's Dream features Tess Malis Kincaid as Titania, Daniel Thomas May as Demetrius, Joe Knezevich as Lysander, Allison Leigh Corke as Helena, Sarah M. Johnson as Hermia, and Michael Bradley Cohen as Puck. Long-time Georgia Shakespeare favorite Chris Kayser plays Nick Bottom and is joined by a band of rude mechanicals portrayed by Neal A. Ghant (Frances Flute), Brian Harrison (Snug the Joiner), Tim McDonough (Snout) and Chris Ensweiler (Quince).

Vengeance is in the air when Georgia Shakespeare presents Titus Andronicus, an epic story of a Roman general who returns home in triumph with a perilous war trophy - Goth Queen Tamora - which sets in motion a vicious cycle of revenge and retribution. Titus Andronicus runs July 9 - August 2 and promises to be an explosive blend of Pulp Fiction meets the Bard as director Richard Garner brings Shakespeare's most outrageous play to Atlanta audiences.

Leading the cast is Tess Malis Kincaid as Goth Queen Tamora. Joe Knezevich plays Roman Emperor Saturninus, the husband who helps Tamora get her revenge on Titus Andronicus (Chris Kayser) and his daughter Lavinia (Sarah M. Johnson). The cast also includes Michael Bradley Cohen, Allison Leigh Corke, Chris Ensweiler, Neal A. Ghant, Brian Harrison, Daniel Thomas May, Tim McDonough, Megan McFarland, Courtney Patterson and Brad Sherrill.

In addition to the productions mentioned above, Georgia Shakespeare's 2009 season includes the Family Classic Series production of Alice in Wonderland (July 18 - August 1), a one-week special engagement of Rick Miller's MacHomer (August 26 - 30) and Shakespeare's political drama Julius Caesar (October 10 - November 1). Georgia Shakespeare Receives $25,000 Grant from National Endowment for the Arts

Theatre will participate in Shakespeare for a New Generation Initiative

The National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) has awarded Atlanta's Georgia Shakespeare with a $25,000 grant to participate in Shakespeare for a New Generation for 2009 - 2010. The grant will allow Georgia Shakespeare to expand its professional tour production of Macbeth to 15 schools in underserved areas of Georgia, western North Carolina, and southeastern Alabama. Additional activities will include workshops for students and professional development for teachers. Georgia Shakespeare is one of 37 arts organizations from around the country to be selected for this year's program.

"We are honored to once again be selected to participate in this important initiative," said Georgia Shakespeare producing artistic director Richard Garner. "Shakespeare for a New Generation allows us to bring our professional school tour to areas of the southeast that might not otherwise have exposure to classic literature performed live on stage. By bringing Shakespeare's work to life, offering interactive workshops and working directly with teachers, we hope to ignite a life-long love for literature and Shakespeare that will have lasting effects on the students we reach through this program." The 2009 - 2010 grant cycle marks Georgia Shakespeare's fourth year of being selected for the competitive program.

Macbeth will be performed as part of Georgia Shakespeare's expanded Will on Wheels program, in which five classic-themed plays tour the southeast from September, 2009 through April, 2010. In addition to Macbeth, 2009/2010 titles include Alice in Wonderland, American Tall Tales: Stories from Edgar Allen Poe, Bard's Best: Lovers, Poets & Madmen, and Global Celebrations: Holidays of Light. All productions are performed by the Will Power Ensemble, Georgia Shakespeare's cast of professional actors/teaching artists and meet Georgia State Education Performance Standards. For more information, visit www.gashakespeare.org/education.

Part of the NEA's Shakespeare in American Communities initiative, Shakespeare for a New Generation targets middle and high school students, introducing young people to the power of live theater and the masterpieces of William Shakespeare. Managed by Arts Midwest, the program already has benefited more than one million students and their teachers with live performances and educational activities. The program also has provided employment to more than 1,200 theater artists, including actors, directors, stage managers, and scenic designers.

Including the newly selected companies, more than 80 of the nation's theater companies have taken part in the NEA's Shakespeare program since its inception. By June 2009, participating theater companies will have presented performances at 3,600 schools in 2,300 communities in all 50 states and the District of Columbia.

To enhance the educational impact of Shakespeare for a New Generation, the NEA also has developed free, multimedia educational resource kits. To date, more than 65,000 toolkits have been distributed to classroom teachers. Included in the kits are a teacher's guide with lesson plans, a recitation contest guide, Fun with Shakespeare brochure with word games and trivia, a timeline poster, a CD, and two educational DVDs. These resources can be ordered free of charge from www.shakespeareinamericancommunities.org.

Atlanta’s Alliance Theatre Proudly Announces Its 2009-10 Season

September 2009 – May 2010

Atlanta’s nationally acclaimed Alliance Theatre, recipient of the Regional Theatre Tony Award®, and Artistic Director Susan V. Booth are proud to announce the 2009–10 Season for the Alliance Stage, the decidedly underground Hertz Stage and the Alliance Children’s Theatre. The 41st season celebrates music, dance and comedy in a fashion only live theatre can deliver. The 2009-10 Season boasts four world premieres and four wildly unique musicals. These incredible productions speak to the reputation the Alliance has built and lived for more than four decades. (Current production dates are shown in parenthesis.)

Alliance Stage Productions

· Remember that song… that dance… that special someone – that moment when you fell in love and fell in love again. Wrap yourself in romance as Twyla Tharp makes the music of America’s greatest singer dance off the stage. Come Fly With Me opens the season with the voice of singing legend Frank Sinatra, set to the Broadway genius of Twyla Tharp’s breathtaking choreography (last seen in Broadway’s Movin’ Out). This World Premiere theatre-dance celebration features music that makes us swoon to such memorable hits as “Pick Yourself Up,” “Witchcraft” and “My Way.” Gorgeous vocals. A big band. A great night out. The musical is conceived, directed and choreographed by Twyla Tharp. This will be a rare, not-to-be-missed event. Come fly with us! (Sept. 16 – Oct. 11, 2009)

· Broadway legend AndrĂ© De Shields debuts at the Alliance in the fall, starring in David Mamet’s A Life in the Theatre. This ode to the art form delves into the lives of two actors: the veteran and the bright-eyed up-and-comer. Directed by critically acclaimed
writer/director Robert O’Hara (In the Continuum, off-Broadway and internationally), the play gives the audience access to the performers' lives both onstage and off. (Oct. 28 – Nov. 15, 2009)

· One Alliance Theatre production on the main stage is still to be determined. It will be a musical. Is it a beloved classic or a World Premiere? Stay tuned… (January – February 2010)

· The final production on the main stage for the 2009-10 Season defies logic – and gravity – in a topsy-turvy, timeless tale of a little girl who journeys through the looking glass to become a queen. Lookingglass Alice is based on Lewis Carroll's popular “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” and will keep both adults and kids spellbound. Audiences will marvel as Alice floats, falls and flies overhead in this gymnastic production adapted and directed by Lookingglass Theatre Company Artistic Director David Catlin. The show, produced on a radically reconfigured Alliance Stage, is filled with high flying acrobatics that put the wonder back in Wonderland. (Mar. 31 – May 2, 2010)

Hertz Stage Productions

· The Second City is back at the Alliance! Just in time for the holiday season, the hit comedy team from Chicago will once again transform the Hertz Stage into an underground comedy club for a World Premiere revue. The Second City: Peach Drop, Stop and Roll is an original comedy ready to take on all things Atlanta. The hilarious revue is created in partnership with Chicago’s fabled The Second City, renown for producing the most accomplished comedians and writers in contemporary America (i.e., Steve Carell, Dan Aykroyd, Bill Murray, Gilda Radner, Mike Myers and Tina Fey). A great gift of laughter for Atlanta’s holiday season. (Nov. 6 – Dec. 13, 2009)

· Tennis in Nablus is the sixth winner of the nationally recognized Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition. Written by emerging playwright Ismail Khalidi, this World Premiere provides an unexpected view of Palestine, circa 1939. Tennis in Nablus looks at Palestine’s embattled status through the eyes of a lifelong rebel, his wife (a writer of anti-colonial tracts) and his enterprising young nephew. It is a play about allegiance, struggle and crisis, where events and people are not what they seem. (Jan. 29 – Feb. 21, 2010)

· The Alliance Theatre is thrilled to welcome master storyteller and nationally acclaimed solo performer Mike Daisey with his latest monologue, The Last Cargo Cult. In it, he tells the true-life unbelievable tale of a religion created by Pacific Islanders around abandoned American military bases. Daisey traveled to the South Pacific to meet and live with these islanders, and he weaves their stories of trust, belief and sympathetic magic against our own culture’s version of the cargo cult: the story of our current international financial crisis. The Last Cargo Cult uses both worlds to tell a darkly hilarious and shockingly true story that examines our universal desire to accumulate goods and power. The monologue is created and performed by Mike Daisey, and directed by his longtime collaborator, Jean-Michele Gregory. (Mar. 19 – Apr. 11, 2010)

Family Series

· Rosemary Newcott, The Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth, once again demonstrates her talent for understanding the rhythms and energy of Disney classics by staging Mulan in the theatrically inventive style of Aladdin and Seussical the Musical. Based on the 1998 Disney film “Mulan” and the story “Fa Mulan” by Robert D. San Souci, Mulan is the tale of a heroic young girl in China posing as a man in order to serve the Emperor. An adventure of a lifetime provides a lesson in overcoming adversity in a tale that will entertain and empower. (Feb. 24 – Mar. 21, 2010)

Special Holiday Show

· Scrooge is back! A Christmas Carol, our holiday gift to Atlanta, is back for its 20th smash year. This Broadway-scale musical features the best singers and actors Atlanta has to offer. Full of beloved songs of the holiday season, it is an Atlanta tradition. Rosemary Newcott will transform this heartwarming classic into a lavish feast for the eyes, ears, heart and soul. (Nov. 27 – Dec. 24, 2009)

Subscriptions to the Alliance Theatre 2009-10 Season are on sale now and may be purchased by calling 404.733.4600 (Mon. – Fri. 9 a.m. – 5 p.m.). Single tickets go on sale later this summer.

Movin' Out Coming to Fox Theatre May 1 - 3

MOVIN’ OUT, the Tony Award-winning new musical conceived, choreographed and directed by Twyla Tharp and based on 24 classic songs by Billy Joel, comes back to Atlanta for a special engagement at The Fabulous Fox Theatre May 1 – 3, 2009, presented as a season special by Fidelity Investments Broadway Across America - Atlanta. Tickets are on sale now.

Critics say MOVIN’ OUT revolutionized musical theatre as we know it. “So exhilarating and soul-stirring, it practically bursts out of the theatre,” said Time Magazine. “Movin’ Out is electrifying! The union of Tharp and Joel is one made in heaven,” raved the Chicago Tribune.

Told through the choreography of Twyla Tharp and more than two dozen of Billy Joel’s songs, MOVIN' OUT is the story of lifelong friends through two turbulent decades that change them and the world around them forever. Songs like “It’s Still Rock and Roll to Me,” “We Didn’t Start the Fire,” and “Pressure” all come together to weave a musical backdrop which beautifully complements Tharp’s innovative choreography. The songs and dance take audiences through a poignant narrative comprised of three main elements: post-World War II idealism, the Vietnam War and its subsequent unrest, and finally, survival.

Many will recognize MOVIN’ OUT’s main characters, as they come straight from Joel’s lyrics. There’s Brenda and Eddie from “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant,” Tony and Sergeant O’Leary from “Movin’ Out,” Judy from “Why, Judy, Why,” and James from “James”—and their story is told completely through dance, with no dialogue whatsoever. MOVIN’ OUT is “a story told without language,” Tharp says. “The movement and the action tell the story—the experience, the emotional resonance, comes from action rather than language.”

The Broadway production of MOVIN’ OUT played for over three years, closing on December 11, 2005, after 28 previews and 1,303 regular performances. It joined the pantheon of great Broadway dance musicals when it surpassed the runs of Contact, Fosse and Bring in ‘Da Noise/Bring in ‘Da Funk. MOVIN’ OUT received two 2003 Tony Awards – one for Ms. Tharp (Best Choreography) and one for Mr. Joel (Best Orchestrations).

MOVIN’ OUT features a scenic design by Kelly Tighe, costume design by Suzy Benzinger, lighting design by Donald Holder and sound design by Duncan Robert Edwards. Musical Supervision is by Rob Cookman.

The performance schedule for MOVIN’ OUT at The Fox Theatre is as follows:

Friday, May 1…………………..8:00 p.m.
Saturday, May 2……………….2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m.
Sunday, May 3………………1:00 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

Atlanta's Most Cherished Southern Story, Driving Miss Daisy, Journey's Home

Theatrical Outfit
Apr 22 - May 17

It’s been twenty-one years since Driving Miss Daisy by Atlanta native Alfred Uhry, made its Southeastern premiere on the Alliance stage, where it had a successful two-year run with Robert J. Farley as director; this spring, Farley returns to direct the play at Theatrical Outfit at the Balzer Theater at Herren’s from April 22 through May 17, 2009.

In those two decades, Driving Miss Daisy has been around the block a few times, winning both a Pulitzer Prize for its Off-Broadway production in 1987 and an Academy Award for Best Picture for its 1989 film version (for which Uhry wrote the screenplay). The first of Uhry’s “Atlanta Trilogy” of plays about Jewish life in Atlanta (which includes The Last Night of Ballyhoo and Parade), Driving Miss Daisy is largely autobiographical, with the characters fashioned after Uhry’s own grandmother Lena Fox and her chauffeur Will Coleman, and contains many references to local landmarks and sites, as well as to the City’s past: an ice storm that paralyzed Atlanta, the bombing of The Temple, and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s speaking engagement at The Biltmore.

In a series of simple and evocative vignettes spanning the years from 1948 to 1973, the play chronicles the servant-employee relationship and the developing bond of friendship between Daisy Werthan, an irascible, strong-willed Jewish matron living in the affluent Druid Hills neighborhood, and her chauffeur Hoke Coleburn, the dignified yet affable African American hired by her concerned middle-aged son Boolie Werthan, a shrewd businessman who refuses to let his mother continue driving after a series of car accidents make her uninsurable.

Driving Miss Daisy is highly reflective of the changing racial and social climates in the Deep South during this era; it works on many levels to demonstrate how status, wealth, discrimination and prejudice colored Daisy’s world and how, over time, her deepening affection for Hoke tore down many of those barriers.

Of his decision to direct the play again, Robert J. Farley remarks, “Driving Miss Daisy is Atlanta’s play, one of its most enduring theatrical legacies, and now at Theatrical Outfit, it will be a whole new legacy, with a completely different cast and in downtown Atlanta. What better place to do it?”

Indeed, Theatrical Outfit is uniquely situated to present this play, since its renovated space in downtown Atlanta was once the famous Herren’s Restaurant, the first eating establishment to voluntarily desegregate in 1962, and just around the corner from Forsyth Street, where Miss Daisy had her humble childhood upbringing. The playwright Uhry explained why he thought Driving Miss Daisy became such a surprise hit, “I wrote what I knew to be the truth, and people have recognized it as such…these were two people who came to love each other and had no means at all of telling each other.”

Interestingly, in the spring of 1987, director Farley was in the New York audience of the very first premiere of Driving Miss Daisy at Playwrights Horizons; he was a guest of the actress playing Daisy, Dana Ivey, an Atlanta native and daughter of Mary Nell Santacroce, whom Farley cast in the lead role for his Alliance production. A written interview with Farley about that memorable evening and his additional thoughts on the play and the Theatrical Outfit production appears on the theater’s website (www.theatricaloutfit.org).

The stellar cast for this production, whom Farley calls “the cream of the crop,” include Jill Jane Clements as Daisy Werthan, Rob Cleveland as Hoke Coleburn and William S. Murphey as Boolie Werthan. Clements directed Theatrical Outfit’s fall production of A Lesson Before Dying and this winter appeared as Amanda in Southern Comforts at Georgia Ensemble Theatre (and at Theatrical Outfit last winter), as Mrs. Reeves in The Chase, Ima in The Immigrant, and Mama Lilly in Hank Williams, all at Theatrical Outfit; she received the 2007 Suzi Bass Award for Outstanding Featured Actress in Theatre in the Square’s production of Turned Funny. Rob Cleveland has appeared in over fifty professional stage productions around the country and is an associate artist with GA Shakespeare, whose Theatrical Outfit credits include: I’m Not Rappaport, The Complete Works of Wm. Shakespeare, Abridged, and Master Harold and the Boys; he was most recently seen in High John the Conqueror and African Folktales (Theatre in the Square), and his film credits include That Darn Cat and Drumline. William S. Murphey was in Theatrical Outfit’s productions of The God Committee, The Chase, and A Lesson Before Dying; additionally he has appeared at Theatre in the Square in Room Service, The Poetry of Pizza, and the one-man comedy Fully Committed (Jennie Award for Best Actor) and at Georgia Ensemble in Our Town, Season’s Greetings!, and Lying in State.

Tickets are $30. Preview performances are Wed., April 22 – Fri., April 24 at 7:30 pm, and opening night is Sat., April 25 at 7:30 pm. Gallery Players Murder Off The Cuff Coming to Baja's in Newnan on April 5

It was recently announced that Senoia actor Joey Waldrop had left the Fayette-based Gallery Players improvisation troupe (run by Offshoot Productions) in order to accept a position at Disney Studios in Florida. That same (and an earlier) announcement stated that another Cowetan, Chrisi Talyn of Palmetto, had recently joined Gallery Players. It was also announced that the schedule of performances of its latest show Murder Off The Cuff would remain the same -- the only difference is that Waldrop will no longer be a part of Gallery Players. Murder Off The Cuff takes improvisation to a new level -- the audience is involved! To see what this really means, you will need to attend a performance of it.

One of these performances will be held at 7 PM on Sunday April 5 at a Newnan venue, namely Baja's at 385 Jackson Street, at the intersection of 34 bypass and Hwy 29, directly across the street from the Coweta-Fayette EMC building. This can be considered a Dinner Theatre performance because it will include a taco buffet dinner. The $20 tickets include the cost of the dinner.. They can be picked up at Baja's or charged by phoning there (770-683-3474) or purchased with a check made out to Offshoot Productions and mailed to P.O. Box 2462, Peachtree City, GA 30269.

Information on the Gallery Players is available from its Founder/Director Dr. Susan Steadman at (770) 631-2362 or offshootpr@aol.com or by visiting its website www.offshoot.org.

Information on Baja's is available on their website http://bajasnewnan.com. They are known for their great food and their great entertainment and for providing a fun atmosphere in their restaurant.

Theatrical Outfit Announces Its 2009-10 Season; Launches with World Premiere of the Opera King

Theatrical Outfit begins its 33rd season with the world premiere of KING, with libretto, music, and lyrics by Douglas Tappin. The story of a preacher from Atlanta, this glorious musical tribute to the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., blends the operatic form with indigenous gospel, blues and other contemporary musical influences and features a cast of twenty-five and a fifteen-person orchestra. While the actual run dates for Theatrical Outfit’s upcoming productions are being finalized, KING is scheduled for the month of September, 2009, and is the pitch-perfect start to the five-show season, which includes both classic and new works. For ages 10 and up for adult themes.

Following KING, the 2009-10 Theatrical Outfit season also includes:

Around The World In 80 Days (October – November, 2009) Adapted by Mark Brown from the novel by Jules Verne.

The original “Amazing Race,” this comedy/adventure, set in 1872, is a high-spirited romp through different continents, cultures and time zones that puts one man’s life and fortunes at risk. After making an outrageous wager, the unflappable Phileas Fogg and his man-servant Passepartout, embark on an extraordinary itinerary and global race against the clock, all the while eluding a misdirected detective. Complete with angry natives, typhoons, runaway trains and a damsel in distress, 80 Days is a delightful odyssey for the entire family. For all ages.
“Action and hilarity to spare.” - Boston Globe

Brownie Points (February, 2010) by Janece Shaffer

This new comic drama by the popular Atlanta playwright masterfully mirrors modern families and society through the multi-cultural mayhem of a Brownie troop’s camp-out in the north Georgia mountains. When a fierce, unexpected storm strands a group of mothers and daughters overnight in the woods, ethnic prejudices, some latent, others blatant, bubble to the surface and force the adults to examine which is deeper—the shared experience of motherhood or the divisive judgments of their upbringing. Brownie Points is both touching and comical in its portrayal of race, stereotypes and how people relate to each other, both unwittingly and intentionally. For age 12 and up, for adult language.

The Sunset Limited (March - April, 2010) A Novel in Dramatic Form by Cormac McCarthy
A startling encounter on a New York subway platform leads two strangers to a dilapidated tenement where a life or death decision begs the existential question: is there light at the end of the tunnel? In a split-second intervention, the character Black, a Christian ex-con, prevents the character White, a nihilistic and world-weary professor, from hurtling himself in the path of an oncoming commuter train. The ensuing philosophical sparring between the two sparks an intriguing articulation of opposing belief systems and the internal debate between innate human isolation versus transcendent communion. Published in 2006 and first performed at Chicago’s Steppenwolf Theatre, The Sunset Limited has been praised as “deft, spare, and full of artful tension,” and contains the brilliant, often darkly humorous, dialogue for which McCarthy is celebrated. For age 16 and up, for adult themes and language.

“This is mind-expanding theater at its best.” - Chicagocritic.com

Blues in the Night (April - May, 2010) Conceived and Originally Directed by Sheldon Epps
Tony-nominated, this scorching Broadway musical, set in a seedy Chicago hotel, is a full-out compilation of blues songs that interweaves stories of life, loss and love through the unrivalled tunes and lyrics of Bessie Smith, Duke Ellington, Johnny Mercer, Harold Arlen, and many more. For age 16 and up, for adult themes.

“…crowd-pleasing appeal…knock ‘em dead vocalizing…” Variety

In addition to our regular season, Theatrical Outfit will present these two must-see co-productions:

Cotton Patch Gospel (Summer, 2009) Written by Tom Key and Russell Treyz, with music and lyrics by Harry Chapin

A gem of musical theater, Cotton Patch Gospel adapts Clarence Jordan's "Cotton Patch" versions of the gospels of Matthew and John for the stage, transplanting the story of Jesus into the mid-20th-century American South and considering what might have happened had Jesus been born in Georgia--with Gainesville standing in for Bethlehem, Valdosta for Nazareth and Atlanta as the fateful Jerusalem. This perennial favorite plows new ground with an all-new cast and is co-produced with Third Coast Productions. For all ages.

“Cotton Patch Gospel is the musical that asks: Would the people of today’s world know a savior if they saw him?…the underlying message is spiritual…it’s deeply moving…” Atlanta Journal-Constitution

Amahl and the Night Visitor (December, 2009) Composed and written by Gian Carlo MenottiThis vocal score is a new and revised edition of the well-known opera that made television history on Christmas Eve, 1951, and is in collaboration with the Georgia State University School of Music. Haunting and vivid musical interpretations capture the humble life of a crippled child and his impoverished mother and describe one mesmerizing evening when traveling magi from the East mysteriously seek rest with them. Among the unforgettable songs are Don't Cry Mother Dear; From Far Away We Come; Good Evening!; Come In!; Have You Seen a Child?; Dance of the Shepherds; and All That Gold. In one night’s brief encounter, gifts both spiritual and material are bestowed on Amahl, who is miraculously healed and able to join the kings on their quest to find the Christ child. For all ages. “Amahl is the modern equivalent of a medieval mystery play…not biblical but an invented fable…Menotti’s music is attractive and unfailingly lyrical.” – The New York Times
