The Alliance Theatre announces the world premiere of Bring It On: The Musical, which debuted on the Alliance Stage January 15, 2011. The high-stakes world of competitive cheerleading meets the cutthroat rivalries of high school politics in this daring and explosive new musical comedy. The star-studded creative team behind the production has crafted an original with all new characters and storylines that is certain to surprise and delight audience members.
The team behind the world premiere of Bring It On: The Musical is an extraordinarily rare union of some of Broadway's most acclaimed, award-winning, young creators. With an original book by Tony Award® winner Jeff Whitty (Avenue Q), music and lyrics by Tony Award®-winning composer Lin-Manuel Miranda (In the Heights), music by Pulitzer and Tony Award®-winning composer Tom Kitt (Next to Normal) and lyrics by Broadway lyricist Amanda Green (High Fidelity), the production is directed and choreographed by Tony Award winner Andy Blankenbuehler (In the Heights).
“Kicking off 2011 with this world premiere is a prime example of the Alliance’s deep commitment to offering Atlanta the country’s first look at Broadway’s best and brightest creating new work at the top of their game,” said Susan V. Booth, Jenning Hertz, Jr. Alliance Theatre Artistic Director. “Welcoming a creative team of this magnitude to Atlanta is a gift both for and from the Alliance for our audiences and the community at large.”
Bring It On: The Musical is presented at the Alliance Theatre by a special arrangement with Universal Pictures Stage Productions/Glenn Ross, Beacon Communications/Armyan Bernstein & Charlie Lyons, and Kristin Caskey & Mike Isaacson, Executive Producers.
“From my first eye-opening moment stepping into the cheerleading world, I was instantly struck by the passion and raw emotion filling every athlete stepping out onto the competition mat. That live or die commitment was truly inspiring,” said director and choreographer Andy Blankenbuehler. “The team of Bring It On: The Musical quickly saw a parallel between the passion on the cheerleading floor and the attitude of young people everywhere who felt their own passions burn within them. We quickly saw that our story was not about winning or losing, but our story was about finding out what was in your heart and following with all the truth, love and spirit that you could muster up. The path before us in life is definitely curvy, but if we live true to our heart, we all find out what "winning" means to each of us.”
The lead actors in Bring It On: The Musical include Amanda Lea LaVergne (Campbell), who recently performed in Grease and All Shook Up on Broadway; Adrienne Warren (Danielle), fresh from the recent national tour of Dreamgirls and Nick Blaemire (Randall), who appeared in the original Broadway production of Cry-Baby.
The all-star cast includes some of the nation’s most skilled competitive cheerleaders. Their combined achievements include over 25 national and 50 team titles in gymnastics and choreography. They were selected in part through a collaboration with Varsity, the global leader in competitive cheerleading. Among eight of the most notable are: Antwan Bethea, Michael Naone-Carter, Courtney Corbeille, Brooklyn Freitag, Melody Mills, Sheldon Tucker, David Ranck, and Lauren Whitt.
Members of the artistic design team that help bring this production to life on the Alliance stage are David Korins, set designer; Andrea Lauer, costume designer; Jason Lyons, lighting designer; Brian Ronan, sound designer. Tony Award® winner Alex Lacamoire serves as music supervisor for the production.

Georgia Ensemble Theatre Presents "Tokens of Affection" Jan 6 - 23
Georgia Ensemble Theatre (GET), North Fulton’s only professional theatre company, will present the third production of its 18th “X-traordinary” Season with the world premiere of Tokens of Affection, by award-winning Atlanta Playwright Topher Payne, at the Theatre’s home in the Roswell Cultural Arts Center, 950 Forrest Street, Roswell, GA 30075. This production is generously sponsored by the Macy’s Foundation.
About the Play:
Playwright Topher Payne calls this new romantic comedy, “THE PARENT TRAP for grown-ups!” Tokens of Affection deals with “empty nesting,” the complications of romance, and family dysfunction. What is a husband to do when his wife of 37 years announces she’s leaving? Both seek solace at the homes of their grown children, to panicked and hilarious results.
Artistic Director Robert J. Farley says of producing this world premiere, “I am so excited about this play. Creating something from the ground up is always exhilarating and admittedly a bit scary. The journey with Topher Payne has been wonderful, and I’m thrilled for GET to get ‘bragging rights’ on this one, because I believe it’s going to ‘have legs!’”
About the Playwright/Director:
Topher Payne was this year’s selection for “Best Local Playwright” by the readers of Creative Loafing, and was voted “Best Local Writer” and “Best Actor” by the readers of The GA Voice. Process Theatre Company’s production of his play Above the Fold won the 2009 Metro Atlanta Theatre Award for Best Original Work and Best Play of the Year. He is a columnist for The GA Voice, Project Q Atlanta and Fenuxe Magazine. Favorite directing projects include productions of On Golden Pond, Impossible Marriage, and Stories I Ain’t Told Nobody Yet. In May, he will premiere the farce Lakebottom Proper at the State Theatre of Georgia, The Springer Opera House.
In his Director’s Notes for this play, Topher writes, “(As) my wedding day was approaching … I attempted to picture what the marriage I was committing to would look like several decades down the road. It scarcely seems possible that you could make a vow in your twenties and manage to live up to it in your seventies. Eventually I sorted out my thoughts the only way I know how: I wrote a play. My first love story. It began with a couple who have lived more years together than they did apart, who have somehow lost sight of what makes them work. Then more voices began to show up, and I realized it was a play about how we give our hearts to the variety of people God guides into our lives. And then there are misunderstandings and lots of messy complications.” He goes on to say of this GET production, “The cast of Tokens of Affection has done such incredible work capturing those seemingly contradictory aspects of relating to people we love: the challenges, and the laughter.”
About the Cast:
The cast of Tokens Affection features Judy Leavell (GET’s The Lady with All the Answers and Steel Magnolias), John Stephens (Theatre Gael Artistic Director, Conversations with My Wife at Theatre in the Square), Shelly McCook (Season’s Greetings and Twentieth Century at GET), Kelly Criss (River Rat & Cat and And Then They Came for Me tour at GET), Matthew Myers (Dracula at Aurora Theatre, Waiting for Godot at Theatre Gael), and Googie Uterhardt (You Can’t Take it With You at Theater Emory, Music Man and Little Shop of Horrors at Atlanta Lyric). The design team includes Stephanie Polhemus as Scenic Designer, Bryan Rosengrant as Lighting Designer, Linda Patterson as Costume Designer, and Jason Polhemus as Sound Designer. Topher Payne directs the show; and Hayley Brotherton is Stage Manager.

Broadway Baby Comes Home to Help Foster Children
Curtains Up, the non-profit performing arts company that mentors at-risk children to become confident and successful performers, invites the community to see their production of Annie at Onstage Atlanta on November 8 through November 13, 2010. Mary Stewart Sullivan, a Broadway performer, will star as the title role opposite Jennifer Salberg, founder of Curtains Up, as Miss Hannigan.
Jennifer started Curtains Up in 2004. She produces Broadway shows that inspire children and encourage them to reach for the stars. In addition, Curtains Up gives every child the opportunity to stand in the spotlight.
In 2005, Mary Stewart, at the age of four, learned how theatre could be fun and philanthropic from “Ms. Jen”. Thus, their magnetic force, which will be evident in Annie, began.
This year, with the help of her Curtains Up background, Mary Stewart landed the role and played Jojo in Seussical with the Atlanta School of the Performing Arts. During that production, the magic of Broadway struck. At eight years old, she received the call of a lifetime and was whisked away to perform as the daughter of Tony Award Winner Norbert Leo Butz in Enron, A true story of false profits. Mary Stewart returns to Atlanta to play Annie and help Curtains Up support foster children.
All of the ticket money from Annie will go to at-risk and foster children.
For tickets and more information please call 404-459-0409 or visit www.curtainsupinc.org

Center for Puppetry Arts Presents Charlotte’s Web, Opening September 30
This month, E.B. White’s classic children’s book Charlotte’s Web hits the stage at the Center for Puppetry Arts. A celebration of compassion, friendship and ingenuity, this charming tale has captivated generations with its enduring story of the lengths to which friends will go to help each other. Adapted for the stage by Joseph Robinette, Charlotte’s Web presents the adventures of that terrific pig Wilbur and his barnyard friends through the magic of puppetry.
The story begins one morning on Mr. Arable’s farm where the family awakes to find that a litter of pigs has been born during the night. Farmer Arable is pleased with the pigs, except for the runt of the litter, which he considers to be small and worthless. The farmer wants to kill the pig, but Mr. Arable’s daughter, Fern, protests. Fern rescues the runt and names him Wilbur. Fern cares for Wilbur until he grows bigger and must be moved to her Uncle Homer’s farm.
On Homer Zuckerman’s farm, Wilbur, young and innocent, is confused and scared by the other animals on the farm. Wilbur misses the Arable farm - especially Fern - until he befriends Charlotte, a gray spider who lives above his pen in the barn. Charlotte is wise and teaches Wilbur about true friendship. When Wilbur finds out that he is being fattened up to be slaughtered, Charlotte uses her amazing ability to weave words into her web above Wilbur’s pen. The words describe Wilbur as “Some Pig,” “Radiant” and “Terrific.” The miracle in Zuckerman’s barn attracts the attention of the press. The news spreads quickly throughout the community about “Zuckerman’s Famous Pig.”
With Charlotte’s help, Wilbur becomes a celebrity and is saved from the slaughterhouse. Soon afterward, the time comes for Charlotte to lay her egg sac. After she accomplishes this, Charlotte becomes weak and dies. Wilbur is greatly saddened, but pledges to care for the egg sac until the baby spiders hatch. As Charlotte’s children emerge from the egg sac, Wilbur begins to understand that life is ongoing and ever-changing and that friends are never forgotten.
“Charlotte’s Web is a classic story that shows the courage, love, and respect that true friendship can inspire. These characters are timeless, hilarious, and very real” comments director Michael Haverty.
Dressed in black from head to toe, the show’s five puppeteers remain in the shadows as they manipulate their puppets in the lighted playing areas, a technique called “Czech Black” puppetry as Czech Black technique as it originated in the Czech Republic of Central Europe. The puppets in this show are controlled by a mechanism in back of their heads that the puppeteers use to make the characters turn their heads, look up and down and focus on objects and other characters.
Families can have fun exploring their creativity, before or after the show, in the Create-A-Puppet Workshop, where they can create their own Wilbur Pig Hand Puppet; admission is included in the All-Inclusive ticket cost.
Charlotte’s Web opens on September 30 and will host special preview days on September 28 and 29 at 10:00 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. each day. The show will run September 30 through October 31 at the following times:

Jerry Springer Set to Razzle Dazzle in Chicago at the Fox Theatre
September 8-13
“Stop the presses! I’ve always wanted to say that,” enthuses Christopher B. Manos, Producer of Theater of the Stars. “I know you might be reading this on your Blackberry, but this is exciting news. Cultural icon and ringmaster extraordinaire Jerry Springer will star as the flamboyant lawyer and master showman ‘Billy Flynn’ in the smash hit musical CHICAGO when it plays the Fabulous Fox Theatre from Sept 8-13. Add this news to the fact that the show is celebrating eleven glorious years of girls, glitz and glamour and you’ve got pure entertainment! Tickets are on sale NOW at all Ticketmaster locations and at www.ticketmaster.com. Make plans to join us!”
Murder. Greed. Corruption. Violence. Exploitation. Adultery. Treachery. Set amidst the dazzling decadence of the 1920s, CHICAGO is the story of Roxie Hart, a housewife and nightclub dancer who maliciously murders her on-the-side lover after he threatens to walk out on her. Desperate to avoid conviction, she dupes the public, the media and her rival cellmate, Velma Kelly, by hiring Billy Flynn, Chicago’s slickest criminal lawyer, to transform her malicious crime into a barrage of sensational headlines, the likes of which might just as easily be ripped from today’s tabloids.
Throughout an illustrious career, Jerry Springer has become a cultural and civic icon. In addition to talk show host, he has been the mayor of Cincinnati, political pundit, lawyer, award-winning newscaster, country recording artist, progressive talk-radio broadcaster, international Emcee and TV personality. He has been in movies and on Broadway. Springer won America’s heart with his ballroom dancing on the third season of “Dancing With The Stars” in 2006.
Everyone knew Springer had “arrived” when he was the featured character in The Simpson’s’ 1998 Halloween Special. He has graced the covers of Rolling Stone, Esquire and New York Magazine and he was recently featured in Vanity Fair’s “Vanities.” Barbara Walters chose Springer as one of the 10 Most Fascinating People in her 1998 Special.
Ringmaster hit bookstore shelves in November 1998. Penned by Springer, it is a personal account of his experiences along with remembrances from his childhood and professional career. In November 1998, Springer made his first venture into feature films, starring in Ringmaster, a fictionalized movie chronicling his television talk show. In 1999, Springer teamed up with Mike Myers, where he portrayed himself in the hit movie Austin Powers 2: The Spy Who Shagged Me.
In 2001 Springer added Broadway credits to his distinguished list of achievements, starring for a week in the production of the Rocky Horror Show Live. He has twice served as the master of ceremonies for the Miss World Pageant and was the host of “America’s Got Talent” for two seasons.
Springer, born in London, England, travels back to the UK frequently, doing a variety of late night shows there. In 2007, Springer hosted “Nothing But The Truth,” the forerunner of Fox’s “Moment Of Truth.” A parody of The Jerry Springer Show, Jerry Springer The Opera, played in London to sold out crowds at the prestigious National Theater and garnered awards akin to the Tony Awards. The Opera toured throughout England and received outstanding reviews upon its New York premier at Carnegie Hall in January of 2008.
He hosted a variety show in South Africa for M-Net. The South African program was broadcast in more than 40 African nations, featuring interviews with celebrities, monologues and skits in front of a live studio audience, and ranked among the most popular television show in South Africa. All proceeds from the show went to AIDS charities.
This summer Springer made a triumphant West End stage debut starring as Billy Flynn in CHICAGO for a six week run at the Cambridge Theatre in London.
With a book by Fred Ebb and Bob Fosse, music by John Kander and lyrics by Fred Ebb, CHICAGO is the winner of six 1997 Tony Awards including Best Musical Revival and the Grammy Award for Best Musical Cast Recording.
Directed by Walter Bobbie and choreographed by Ann Reinking, CHICAGO features set design by John Lee Beatty, costume design by William Ivey Long, lighting design by Ken Billington and sound design by Scott Lehrer. The production also features orchestrations by Ralph Burns, supervising music direction by Rob Fisher.
Produced by Barry and Fran Weissler, CHICAGO has become a worldwide phenomenon. The London production of CHICAGO continues to hold the record as the longest running American Musical in West End history.
CHICAGO is a must see! Time Magazine calls it “A Triumph,” Newsweek raves “Smashing” and Entertainment Weekly sums it up by calling CHICAGO “Broadway’s Most Electrifying Show.” Visit www.ChicagoTheMusical.com for more information.
CHICAGO will play the Fabulous Fox Theatre in Atlanta from Sept 8-13, 2009. Performances are Tuesday-Friday at 8 pm, Saturday at 2 pm and 8 pm and Sunday at 1:30 pm and 7 pm. Coweta: An Evening of Improv
During improvisational comedy skits are created on-the-fly, based on a simple idea, premise, or game. Each skit is different and you never know what's going to happen. Improvisation has become more popular the past few years with the introduction of Drew Carey's show "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"
Newnan Community Theatre Company (NCTC) has it's own improvisational comedy troupe. The group practices weekly at the theatre, on Saturdays, and is called NITWITS.
On August 8th the troupe will have it's next performance. The show begins at 8 pm and will be hosted by Bert Lyons.
The NITWITS show is rated PG-13 and lasts about two hours. The cost is $5 at the door. NCTC is located at 24 1st Avenue in downtown Newnan (at the corner of Long Place and 1st Avenue). For more information about the NITWITS or the theatre, visit their website at newnantheatre.org or give the theatre a call at 770-683-6282.

Theatrical Outfit Presents Cotton Patch Gospel
August 12—August 30, 2009 at The Balzer Theatre at Herren’s
"The basic facts of the story are shocking. This teenage girl claims to be impregnated by God. It’s a story that has lived for so many generations that we get used to the shock value of it. By not changing the story but changing the setting of the story affords the audience the opportunity to experience it for the first time."
As a former cast member and now the play’s director, Tom Key cites this sentiment as the key to the success of Cotton Patch Gospel: an adaptation of Clarence Jordan's "Cotton Patch" versions of the gospels of Matthew and John for the stage.
Inspired by both Jordan and his development of the interracial Koinonia farming community in south Georgia, Key and Treyz’s version transplants the story of Jesus into the mid-20th-century American South and considers what might have happened had Jesus been born in Georgia—with Gainesville standing in for Bethlehem, Valdosta for Nazareth, and Atlanta as the fateful Jerusalem.
Several standing ovation-inspiring tours later, this perennial favorite of bluegrass and jazz music and soulful storytelling plows new ground with an all-new cast and is produced in association with Georgia Ensemble Theatre (www.GET.org)

BROADWAY BLOCKBUSTER TO PLAY LIMITED ENGAGEMENTS IN SIX AMERICAN CITIES INCLUDING ATLANTA
7/12/09 It was announced today that Billy Crystal will bring 700 SUNDAYS, his Tony Award-winning Broadway blockbuster, to Atlanta’s Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre December 16-20 as part of a six-city American tour of limited engagements. 700 SUNDAYS, a play performed and written by Mr. Crystal with additional content by Alan Zweibel is directed by two-time Tony Award winner Des McAnuff.
700 SUNDAYS, an autobiographical journey, is an original two-act play in which Billy plays numerous characters that have influenced who he is today. It deals with his youth, growing up in the jazz world of Manhattan, his teenage years, and finally adulthood. It is about family and fate, loving and loss.
“I have thought about 700 SUNDAYS at least once a day since the last time I performed it in Australia two years ago. My love for these characters from the canvas of my life and the incredible connection that I feel with audiences while sharing this personal story have made this one of the most satisfying experiences of my life. I knew I wasn’t done performing it and I knew I’d like to bring the show back when the time felt right. I’m so happy to be playing Atlanta this fall,” said Mr. Crystal.
In its opening week on Broadway, 700 SUNDAYS broke the house record for highest weekly gross at the Broadhurst Theatre and then continued to top its own record every week. The week ending May 22, 2005, marked the highest grossing week, not only for the Broadhurst Theatre, but also for any non-musical production in Broadway history, taking in $1,061,688 at the box office.
The show won the 2005 Tony Award for Special Theatrical Experience and both the 2005 Drama Desk and Outer Critics Circle Awards for Outstanding Solo Performance.
Following the Broadway production, Billy played sold out limited engagements of 700 SUNDAYS in Toronto, Boston, Chicago, San Francisco and Los Angeles. Billy then took 700 SUNDAYS to Melbourne and Sydney, Australia, where both engagements sold out upon announcement and won the 2007 Helpmann Award for Best Special Event.
Produced by Janice Crystal, Larry Magid and Face Productions, 700 SUNDAYS has a scenic design by David F. Weiner, lighting design by David Lee Cuthbert, projection design by Michael Clark and sound design is by Steve Canyon Kennedy.
Atlanta Broadway Series presents this show as a 2009-2010 Season Special. 700 SUNDAYS will play at Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre Wednesday, December 16 through Sunday, December 20. Shows during the week start at 8:00 p.m. Shows on Saturday are at 2:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. Sunday show is at 3:00 p.m. Ticket on-sale information will be released at a later date.

Jungle Comes to Life at Newnan Community Theatre
A book comes to life this April with Newnan Community Theatre Company's next show in their 2009 Season, The Jungle Book.
The adapatation by Joseph Robinette includes the introduction of author Rudyard Kipling. Young Kipling (portrayed by Jaylon Person) is sent from his Bombay home to a British boarding school. At the school, he encounters his own jungle of people. They parallel the animal jungle in his book, one of literature's most enduring classics.
The play includes all of the beloved characters - Mowgli the Indian boy (Reven Hutzelman) and his friends Bagheera (Wyatt Gentry) and Baloo (Sam Wall). Plus of course there is Shere Kahn, the evil tiger (Kain Rieger).
Filled with excitement and humor, the play highlights the struggle of good versus evil, friendship, and loyalty.
Other main cast members are Chandler Mayo (Baby Mowgli), Jake Azarowic (Price/Akela), Sean Owens (Hanley/Tabaqui), Casey Brown (Mother Wolf), James Chappell and Taylor Marshall (Wolf Cubs), Katie Ruttinger (Kaa), Tobie Otte (Rann), Alex Naughton and Davis McCondichie (Hathi the Elephant), Ivanna Osma (Indian Mother), and Savani Rieger (Indian Daughter).
Rounding out the cast as wolves, monkeys, other animals and children are Jonathan Phillips, Christian Pullen, Joey Mathis, Andy Callaway, Cody hammock, Lyndon Marshall, Jason Abranham, Danielle Madison, Annabelle Shiver, Hailey Thomas, Katie Kemp, Allison Abraham, and McKenna Schmidt.
The play is being directed by Laurel Alford, NCTC's Director of Youth Activities. It is rated G. Show dates are April 17, 18, 19, 24, 25, and 26. On Fridays and Saturdays, the show begins at 8 pm. On Sundays it begins at 2:30.
Tickets are $15 for adults, $12 for students and seniors (55+), and $10 for children (12 and under). Reservations are recommended. They can be made by calling the theatre at (770) 683-6282 or emailing nctc@numail.org. Seating is limited and this show is being performed in the black box.
NCTC is located at 24 1st Avenue in downtown Newnan. For more information on the theatre, visit their website at newnantheatre.com.
