The Alliance Theatre announces the beloved musical HONK! will begin performances on Saturday, March 5. Based on Hans Christian Andersen’s beloved children’s fable The Ugly Duckling, HONK! Is the story of an odd looking baby duck, Ugly, and his quest to find his mother.
With an original book and lyrics by Anthony Drewe and music by George Stiles, the production is directed by Sally G. Tomlinson Artistic Director of Theatre for Youth Rosemary Newcott.
“For more than 150 years, this classic tale has taught children to embrace their inner beauty and not to judge others by their appearance,” said Newcott. “HONK! brings the story to life in the form of a musical which has been embraced by audiences all over the world. We’re thrilled to bring its magic to the children of Atlanta.”
HONK! will be performed on the Alliance Stage on weekends beginning Saturday, March 5, 2011 with a matinee at 2:30 p.m. and the opening night performance at 7:00 p.m. Performances continue through Sunday, March 20 with weekend matinees scheduled for Saturday, March 12 and Sundays, March 13 and 20 at 1:00 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. The second matinee on Saturday, March 19 will be performed at 4:00 p.m.

Season ticket prices will vary depending on the number of shows chosen, the number of performances, show time, day of the week and seating location. For current season subscribers, Broadway Across America – Atlanta will send renewal invoices via mail. For ease and convenience, Broadway Across America – Atlanta will also send renewal information via email and encourages patrons to subscribe online for the new season. Current season ticket holders who wish to guarantee their same seats must renew by April 8.
Broadway Across America – Atlanta is also offering a three -part installment payment plan this year to help ticket buyers with season purchases.
Tickets to individual shows in the 2011-2012 season are not available for purchase at this time. Single-show tickets typically go on sale to the general public 6-8 weeks prior to opening night. A variation on the Broadway hit The Odd Couple, Tom Ziegler’s Grace and Glorie is a bittersweet comedy about two very different women who find a common ground in an unlikely meeting. While it is remarkably funny, it also brings up some powerful emotions that keep the two characters and the audience on an emotional roller coaster.
Grace and Glorie tells the tale of Grace (Nancy Gresham), a comfortably religious, cantankerous 90-year-old mountain woman, who has checked herself out of a hospital and returned to her native Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia to die.
Her volunteer, do-gooder hospice worker, Glorie (Norma Richardson), is a sophisticated New York transplant with lots of big city baggage.
From this bond between two women, whose meeting in real life would be improbable, comes a comedy with great tenderness. The two women are polar opposites. Their verbal clashes set off comic sparks. The often-witty dialogue is great fun, accentuated by impeccable comic timing between Grace and Glorie.
Grace and Glorie, directed by Marian Sorensen, is honest, hopeful, sentimental, and filled with good humor. A crowd pleaser. English Company to Present Timeless Fable on War and Friendship
Thingumajig Theatre presents “A November Day: A War Story” at Center for Puppetry Arts
Thingumajig Theatre of West Yorkshire, England, is soon to take the stage at the Center for Puppetry Arts to present its production, A November Day: A War Story, a timeless fable on war and friendship, set upon the backdrop of World War I. With the recent passing of Britain’s last WWI veterans, this production explores the timely question of how we remember this monumental time in modern history.
Britain’s Thingumajig Theatre uses a variety of performing arts to explore how a major event, like the Great War, passes from living memory into written history. The performers use hand, rod and shadow puppets, live music and a transforming set to tell the tale of a British soldier in WWI and his unexpected friendship with a stray dog.
This is the story of quite ordinary people living in an extraordinary era. As co-Artistic Director Kathy Kim describes: “Both my grandfather, John Bradley, and my great-grandfather, Foster Parrington, fought and were wounded on the Somme. I knew neither of these men as they died before I was born, but I know from family hearsay that they would not talk about their experiences at the front, and therefore the opportunity to find out about this first hand died with them. The play is in respect and remembrance for all those whose lives were affected by World War One, and is dedicated to the memory of John Bradley and Foster Parrington.”
Thingumajig Theatre is a visual theatre company based in Todmorden, West Yorkshire, England creating puppet plays for both family and adult audiences, and street theatre acts featuring highly-interactive giant puppets. Their first play, The Vertigo of Sheep was awarded an UNIMA-USA Citation of Excellence, (America’s highest honor for Puppetry). A November Day: A War Story has played throughout the UK, and in Italy, and will visit the Dublin Puppet Festival this spring.

Theatre in the Square’s Hitchcock’s Mystery Thriller, The 39 Steps will extend for an additional week of performances
Theatre in the Square has added six additional performances of The 39 Steps after having several sold out performances. The play, which is adapted by Patrick Barlow from the novel by John Buchan and Alfred Hitchcock’s movie by the same title, will now have its final performance at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, February 27 on the Main Stage.
